honestly say that the books I have purchased based on recommendations
from this list (Oracle8i DBA 101 and Perl for Oracle DBAs to name a couple) have been great additions to my growing library. I fully expect Optimizing Oracle Performance and Effective Oracle by Design to be equally valuable.

Correct. They're totally different, both excellent, and both are two of the best books about Oracle on the market.

You know, Dwayne, there's no reason you shouldn't purchase all three. :-)
The two Kyte books are not the same. You'll obtain excellent knowledge from all of them.
Cheers, Melanie

Why oh why did I not wait? I tracked down and purchased Tom's previous Expert One-on-One Oracle a couple months ago. I even checked to make
sure a new edition was not forthcoming. *sigh* Did not check enough I
guess.
I'll have to compare the two to see if I want to 'upgrade'.
I am waiting, impatiently, for Cary's book (preordered on Amazon). I
just attended the Oracle9i Performance Tuning Class and am quite pumped about
tuning. Especially since we have recently experienced some performance issues.
