Mike, You really don't need to in-line view for this. I'm also not sure what exactly you are trying to do.
You could: select distinct employee_id, lname, fname, mi, hiredate from emp or select distinct employee_id from emp what exactly are your trying to get? Distinct employee_id's? Lname's? Fname's? or a combination of all items?
