If you want a "safe" way and you are using ksh, you can always use

${LD_LIBRARY_PATH:-/usr/lib}

in the list following the "=" sign.

That way, you always have something defined
And when nothing is defined, /usr/lib is the default, so you really haven't
changed anything by putting it in.
