The semi official shtick from Quest is that Oracle changes the log file format rarely because the change ripples through much of the rest of the server code. Log file format affects archiving and recovery at a pretty basic level.
As a financials shop, I don't worry too much about keeping up with Oracle. Oracle development can't do that so neither can we.
