I fear this will get off-topic'd pretty quickly, and, I further fear that
you will think me an old woman with a drool, but my favorites came from the
old Harris/VULCAN machine. Oh, well, those were the days anyway. It just
didn't get worse than Harris/VULCAN with their infamous "modes for
computing". But one thing I liked about the Harris is that *every* error
came along with an error *number*. And you could say "HELP <errnum>" and it
would give you a description of what could be done to fix the error. It
didn't matter if it was COBOL or O/S or one of the "mode errors", they all
had help text. But the error messages weren't written at the same time as
the error numbers were written down. So you would get these great messages
from people who had obviously just been writing error messages too long and
were getting slaphappy. My favorite was something along the lines of...
"You got error <number>? My God! I didn't think ANYONE would ever get THAT
one. Why don't you give me a call and tell me what you did to get this
error so I can rewrite this error text? We probably still won't be able to
fix it though. Why not just scrap whatever you were doing and go get
lunch?"

Yes, the Harris/VULCAN... the crappiest operating system of all time!
