You can do point in time recovery using current controlfile as well. You just say "recover database until cancal using backup controlfile" then, that way Oracle ignores SCN information inside controlfile and trusts only datafile headers.
You have to open resetlogs after that. One issue I see with this approach is that when you have added log/datafiles after your backup, then there'll be controlfile/data dictionary mismatch, but it's anyway solvable.
