Job Title     :     Linux R&D Systems Support


The Linux R&D Systems Engineering team in the Information Technology
Services Division is seeking one or more subcontractors to provide systems
support and systems administration for applications of Linux to the
scientific and engineering efforts at ORNL.



Key tasks and responsibilities include

·    General Linux troubleshooting for desktop and workstation uses of
Linux, with a particular emphasis on Red Hat and Ubuntu, with other Linux
distributions from time to time.

·    Assistance with printer set-up and configuration for desktop systems

·    Assistance with using tools such as NX client, Git, Subversion

·    Installation and configuration of software packages on client and
server Linux systems

·    Assistance with video display issues and networking issues on client
systems (desktops and laptops)

·    Performing set-up of new client systems and restaging (operating
system and application re-installs) of existing systems

·    Troubleshooting CFEngine issues

·    Setting up and troubleshooting NFS mounts

·    Monitoring of server logs for problems and issues of security concern,
particularly for servers used to provide backups, web servers, ssh servers,
and license management

·    Applying patches and upgrades to client and server Linux systems

·    Development and documentation of scripts to simplify system
administration tasks

·    Documenting procedures and troubleshooting methods for users and for
other ITSD staff

·    Participate in on-call rotation support to assist in the stable
operation of user facilities, with primary responsibilities during normal
day shift.



Skill and experience required

·    At least 3 years of practical experience working with one or more
Linux distributions in a business or scientific setting, with at least 1
year of that working with Red Hat, CentOS, or Fedora Linux

·    Work experience which demonstrates good prioritization skills in
dealing with multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, reliability,
self-motivation, and good to excellent troubleshooting skills

·    Excellence in performing customer and/or user support in a computer
support or helpdesk environment

·    Demonstrated good (required) to excellent (desired) written and verbal
communication skills, particularly in the context of working with users to
determine the nature of a computing problem, and documenting solutions, and
writing user assistance documents

·    A good general understanding of networking, routing, and firewall
principles, used to troubleshoot and resolve problems in a networked
computer environment



Desired skills and experience

·    Practical experience working in computer support and/or systems
administration in a scientific, engineering, or other creative environment

·    Practical experience using and/or supporting CFEngine, NX client,
common revision control tools like Git and Subversion, and common
scientific software such as R and Matlab

·    Demonstrated experience writing scripts in common Linux scripting
language, with Perl or Python particularly preferred

·    Experience using and supporting Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh
systems in a scientific, engineering, or other creative environment
