One thing that might help is to have the USB device connected before the machine is turned on. Then make sure that the USB device itself, that is, the mp3 player is turned on. Many such devices post information that the operating system picks up as it runs the internal programs at startup time to initialize all the devices. This is hardware autodetection and it might be able to pick up the mp3 player as it attempts to initialize all the USB ports.
