OK, seems loading the emacs file manually *did* help, though I
still had the SMTP issue.  Turns out the latest emacspeak VM changed the
name of one of the variables slightly.  Instead of using
smtpmail-smtp-default-server, it uses smtpmail-smtp-server.  Once I
fixed that, the SMTP function worked.  Now to figure out how to get rid
of the -q option that keeps emacspeak from loading on its own...
