Please don't immediately apply my suggestions, as I'm not an expert, I'm
just trying to configure gmail too.

Have you tried to remove (or comment out) the line

(setq vm-stunnel-program "/usr/sbin/stunnel")

It may be useful to let VM use default stunnel program. Because, I use
fetchmail and I didn't provide any information about stunnel-program in
fetchmailrc config file (I just configured it to use ssl by one option
"ssl"). I get mail from my gmail account with no problem, but I cann't
send through it, because, I guess, smail doesn't have possibilities for
smtp authentication. I'm going to install exime for this.
