Ooops, sorry, found it... I'll be using the URL generator! That'll be more heavyweight than what I am doing right now but that should work.
Yes. You will have to use the URL generator to obtain the resource by forcing the content-type. See the documentation here:

The URL generator is also used internally in XPL or through XSLT as well, but it doesn't force the content-type to XML.
