Hello,

My name is Alan Chryst and I'm the greenhouse manager of a private
college called Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida. I'm also on a
committee called Friend of Mead Gardens which is also located in Winter
Park, Florida. Our goal is to reinvent and revitalize Mead Gardens.
Currently, we are putting together an exhibit for the Winter Park
Historical Society of Mr. Mead who the garden is named after. Mr.
Mead's chief hobby was growing orchids and he became internationally
recognized. "The London Orchid Review" called him the creator of many
artistic
orchids, two of which The Kew Garden in London named for him. One, the
Cattleya
Meadii, for the man, and the other, the Cattleya Oviedo, for the town in

which he
lived (Oviedo, FL). Mead kept meticulous records of his many
hybridizations. In addition, according to our archives, Mr. Mead
provided orchid seeds to Dr. Lewis Knudsen of Cornell
University in connection with his experiment in orchid seed germination
called the
"Knudsen Method" of germinating orchid seeds on agar jelly in sealed
flasks.
Knudsen's experiments proved conclusively that orchid seeds could be
made to
germinate on their own, refuting the then accepted theory that orchid
seeds
were entirely dependent on symbiotic fungi from the mother plant. Dr.
Knudsen
credits Mr. Mead for providing the pristine seeds and was most helpful
in his
experiments.

As part of the exhibit we would like to include pictures of the two
orchids named after Mr. Mead. I have found a picture of C. Oviedo, but I

cannot find one of C. Meadii for the exhibit. Do you have any you can
send as an attachment to my e-mail address, [EMAIL PROTECTED], or know
of someone I may contact that may have a picture of it?

thank you in advance for your time and help,

Alan Chryst
