At the New York show, I bought a mini Dendrobium which the seller swore is
100% pure Den. lithocola (D. bigibbum compactum), 17th generation, from
Thailand. A semi-alba, no less. (Actually, it looks like a 4n version of my little
Home Depot plant, which was more or less labeled D. Ted Davis x Snowfire.) Has
anyone seen this? As soon as I got it home, I sent the flowers to Selby, but I
haven't heard back from them yet.
Yesterday, at our club auction, I bought a plant in bloom from Andy's Orchids
labeled Den. cariniferum type, from Cambodia. I couldn't figure out what that
meant until I looked it up in Baker & Baker. Apparently there are three,
maybe four species that look almost identical, & only Gunnar Seidenfaden could
tell them apart. Actually, it may be one of the others, as D. cariniferum is only
supposed to have one flower on a cane, while this has two or three. (Of the
two pictures of D. cariniferum I found on the Web, they don't look the same.)
These flowers are not resupinate. I wonder if they are supposed to be that way,
or it happened in shipping.
Being from Andy's, this plant is happily mounted & established on one of
those manzanita sticks, with some moss on its feet, but roots going all over the
mount. However, the BOOK says if you grow it mounted, it needs 75% to 85%
humidity. In the winter, I can barely keep the plant room at 70%, and outdoors in
the summer, it is whatever the weather dictates. Should I pot it now, or let it
alone until I see what the plant does?
