Nancy,

I dont have any problem with all hybrids being excluded from CITES. Even though I tried to spell out my criticism I guess I was not clear enough for some people, though I know icones knows what I was getting at. I will try and be clearer for you.

The Orchid Specialist Group and International Orchid Conservation Congress 2004 purpose is orchid conservation (implied is orchid species conservation). One of the proposed changes to CITES they are putting forth is all hybrids be excluded from CITES and CITES Documentation.

I think this proposal would be fine for orchid businesses or the AOS to pursue with their time and energy. There is an economic benefit to the orchid industry in the proposal, though Carson and I am sure others would question if it would be worth it. What I question is what benefit this proposal would have for orchid conservation and whether organization whose purpose is conservation should be spending their time and effort pursuing this proposal. There are relatively few voices solely for orchid conservation and I think those voices should concentrate their efforts on orchid conservation leaving hybrid trade issues up to businesses and their representatives. Conservation is often less economically tangible to single business, but the benefits to society as a whole are real.

Regardless to whether the proposal becomes a part of CITES, the availability of hybrid orchids for sale is not endangered.

Dear Mark and Dr. Guido;

Hybrid orchids would do better to be excluded from CITES, because the
general public likes hybrids, bigger flowers, less tempermental (except for
that Irene Dobkins -Phal. Ascda. hybrid I killed), and more vigorous. Once you
get into raising orchids you can delve into pure species collection like I did
with Vandaceous orchids.

Regards,

nancy
