Dear Viateur and all,

Bateman was not the first to publish the name of Cattleya quadricolor (Gard. Chron. 1864: 269 [1864]). Some fourteen years earlier, Lindley published his concept of Cattleya quadricolor Lindl. in Paxton's Flower Garden 1: 6 (1850). However, both are to be considered synonyms of Cattleya candida (Kunth) F.Lehm., Gard. Chron., III, 18: 466 (1895). This species was originally described by Kunth as Cymbidium candidum (Kunth in H.B.K., Nov. Gen. Sp. 1(4): 342 [1816]) and in 1895 transferred to the genus Cattleya by Lehmann.

To confuse things even further, there is another Cattleya candida. However, according to Zappi (Kew Bulletin 50(2): 423-425 [1995]), B.S. Williams' concept of Cattleya candida (Gard. Chron. 1851: 453 [1851]) lacks a description, and was hence invalidly published. On top of that, it is a synonym of what nowadays is known as Cattleya loddigesii Lindl., Coll. Bot.: t. 37 (1826).

The Colombian species, with its characteristically cupped flowers, that is most often offered as Cattleya chocoense (and is still recognised as such by the RHS!) and sometimes as C. quadricolor, should hence correctly be called Cattleya candida.

Unfortunately, I can not help you with a scan of Bateman's description as was your request.

Hoping this still helps,
