My question would be, what do you suggest as an alternative for those who are not lucky enough to
be able to have a greenhouse or somewhere to grow outdoors?   Or to be able to afford the fancy
growing under lights setups?

Set aside an enclosed area which will not be damaged by moisture, such as a part of the kitchen, bathroom, sunroom, etc. Use a south facing window if possible. East or West are usable, but will limit your choices. Choose orchids that do not require very high humidity. Many people are successful with Cattleyas, Dendrobiums, Tolumnias, & some Paphs. Use a humidity gauge & supplement the humidity with a room humidifier. Make sure there is a temperature drop at night. Most important, put the orchids outside for the summer.
