"the late Datin Seri Endon Mahmood founded Jendela Batik in 2001 to promote
Malaysian batik to the world. Her final collaboration with the batik
boutique is 'Past-Future', a collection featuring the orange-red orchid
named after her.

ON May 3 this year, the late Datin Seri Endon Mahmood, wife of the Prime
Minister, was honoured with an orchid bred for and named after her.
Previously, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, wife of former Prime Minister Tun
Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and the former Raja Permaisuri Tuanku Siti Aishah had
such flowers named in their honour.

On that Tuesday, the orange-red orchid was officially registered as "Mokara
Datin Seri Endon"...

Malaysian Agriculture Research and Development Institute (Mardi).

Mardi director-general Datuk Dr Saharan Anang presented the ... orchid to
Endon. Dr Saharan explained that Mokara Datin Seri Endon was developed by
crossing Malaysia's most popular cut-flower hybrid Arachnis Maggie Oei with
Ascocenda Udomchai from Thailand.
...
Revealed barely seven months, it is already a sensation as a cut flower due
to its shelf life of 14 days, rare colour combination, free flowering
habit, ease of growth and spectacular cluster of up to 20 flowers per stalk.
...
The Mokara Datin Seri Endon orchid is a prominent presence in Jendela
Batik's 'Past-Future' collection.
...
When Mardi presented and named an orchid after her, she was so enamoured of
it that Faisol Abdullah decided on the spur of the moment to create batik
emblazoned with Mokara Datin Seri Endon flowers. It was originally meant as
a private gift to her but when she saw the finished product with the unique
orange-red petals, she conjured up the idea of launching an entire
collection based on her orchid.
...
"She also wanted Mokara Datin Seri Endon to be publicised and made
accessible to the public to thank the scientists and biologists at Mardi
who worked so hard to give her this present."

The late First Lady wanted Mokara Datin Seri Endon to bloom on gowns,
cocktail dresses, sportswear, leisure caftans and even swimsuits...

The Mokara Datin Seri Endon orchids range is being paraded today at The
Asia Fashion Week in Singapore (Nov 8-10)."
