Juli,
Dr. Bream's comments on E. ciliare clear up an issue for us. We have an E. oerstedii that we always thought looked like an E ciliare except for the bloom time.
Guido, Do we have an E. oerstedii or is it the variety of E ciliare you cited?

Hi folks!

I have a question:
How many types of Epidendrum ciliare are there?

July, I don't know off hand whether the name has been given to different plants at various times, but as far as I can judge there is only one _valid_ one and that is Epidendrum ciliare L. 1759.
(L. stands for Linn?) . However, the date shows that several different varieties have been published:

Epidendrum ciliare var. cuspidatum (Lodd.) Lindl. Fol. Orch. Epid 30. 1853
Epidendrum ciliare var. oerstedii (Rchb.f.) L.O.Williams Ann. Missouri Bot. Gard. 33: 327. 1946
Epidendrum ciliare var. squamatum Schnee Revista Fac. Agric. Univ. Centr. Venezuela 1: 206, tab. 1953
Epidendrum ciliare var. typicum Stehl? Bull. Agric. Martinique 8: 216. 1939 Fl. Desc. Antilles Franc. 1: 130. 1939
Epidendrum ciliare var. viscidum (Lindl.) Lindl. Fol. Orch. Epid 30. 1853

there may be more, but that is what I found in a hurry. I hope this helps

regards
Guido
