Dan, there are many pendulous and regular cymbidiums that will grow and bloom happily almost anywhere in the United States. I know because we got three Homestead-grown cymbidiums awarded by the AOS last year. But you have to be careful where you source them. Most people have no idea what constitutes a heat-tolerant cymbidium. If you like species then you can succeed with things like C. aloifolium but really it is a woeful species and has very short-lived flowers. It has produced advanced hybrids from one of its offspring, Gordon Gibbs.
Try Hatfield Orchids and specify you are looking for heat-tolerant types. If you get cool in Winter then many of the Asiatic types will perform for you (hybrids of C. sinense, C. goeringii etc) but not if you live in South Florida where you also need some ensifolium or similar warm blood. Probably the best of all showy heat-tolerant hybrids to date is Milton Carpenter 'Everglade's Gold'. It is patented but available from both hobby and trade suppliers.
