"Starting Sunday, Washington, D.C.... 13th annual... orchid exhibit
"Orchids: Take a Walk on the Wild Side" at the Smithsonian's National
Museum of Natural History.

... will feature more than 2,000 of the... plants in 300 varieties [genera
?]. The exhibit, designed by Smithsonian's Horticulture Services Division
and the U.S. Botanic Garden, will be on display until April. 22.

... will allow visitors to follow in the footsteps of Smithsonian
researchers. A 6-foot-wide wooden walkway will take flower enthusiasts from
the rainforest floor up into a tree canopy to learn about orchids in their
natural habitats... "canopy walk"...

The exhibition will cover orchid ecology, pollination biology, symbioses,
evolution and phylogeny...
it all gives visitors the illusion of actually climbing into the treetops,
displaying orchids as they would look growing in the wild.

The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, based in Panama and the
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in Edgewater, work around the
world to examine complex interactions between species and their environment.

A special Orchid Family Day is scheduled for March 3 and includes free
activities including an "Orchid Murder Mystery," a scavenger hunt and a
pot-your-own orchid activity."
