I'm trying to understand what distributed mode is and if it could be used
as a marshalling framework.

First off, when I refer to a graph I mean the content of a single
sub-directory
under ${ORIENTDB_HOME}/databases.

Because I anticipate 3000 graphs (subdirs) with 4-6GB of disk each,
I want to spread those graphs across multiple servers.

I don't want ALL 3000 graphs on ALL servers, so is it possible to
disable replication completely?

e.g. I want 10 servers with 300 graphs (subdirs) each such that I could
connect & query any server but the data is only stored on one server.
