Nope, that's the way it's supposed to work.
"make distclean" only cleans up things under Automake's control. Generating Makefile.am's is not under Automake's control.
Is there a reason you want to remove those Makefile.am's?

However, I still seem to have the .am related files (Makefile.am,
.oscar_made_makefile_am) and the top-level cache directory. I believe all
this is from 'autogen.sh' and thought 'make distclean' would get rid of

So can someone hit me with the clue-bat on this "cleanup" issue.
