On the same topic I start to do some atypical stuff: I create with OSCAR on my debian headnode images based on a RPM distro (e.g. CentOS) and then i chroot into the image and build my RPM packages. I did not do a lot of testing (lack of time) but it seems to work well.
Of course, it means that i am more using the systeminstaller capabilities rather than OSCAR features. But OSCAR allows me to have some basic abstractions. In fact, i use more and more OSCAR for other tasks than cluster management.
