Networking errors are fun to diagnose. Where by fun I mean frustrating.
Are you able to reach the nodes from the head, vice versa? Are you using
ssh to test?
I assume you are calling it a hostname lookup problem because it works if
you use ip addresses and not when you use names?
What happens if you do an nslookup on the nodes? It should tell you where
it is getting its address from.
Have you tried a different switch (preferably a very dumb one, maybe even a
hub) to rule out wiring/overly smart networking hardware?
Just some general troubleshooting thoughts.
