Yes.. by default, the image built for the compute nodes will use an SMP kernel anyway. Your only caveat will be the packages which compile kernel modules, like GM and PVFS. It will look at the server to decide whether to build the module for SMP or UP. So... if you're server is SMP, and you use the default (SMP kernel) for all your nodes, then you should be ok.
