i first just removed the /etc/redhat-release line and continued with the
install.
it managed to get right through to having the client nodes do a PXE install.
but, of course the resulting images are corrupt as the required core rpm
files are missing. the PXE install works but the boot then fails.

i then found the compatable rpm (sl-release) replaced this for the redhat
line and could again build the image successfully.

the issue now is back tracking on the corrupted installed nodes.
the generate image fails on

"""""""""

No ipchains on this computer
No modification to do for ipchains
Couldn't push hosts file to images at ./post_clients line 35

Couldn't run postinstall at
/usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/i386-linux-thread-multi/Tk.pm line 247

"""""""""

this is repeatable.
there was a few errors prior when i tried to use the same client name/ip
ranges. but the above erro is when i have a unique name/range.

how does one reset the SIS component to let is start at 'zero' again ?

i've been encouraged by the GRID we hope to join to use the SL 3.x
i'm downloading the SL 4.2 as i type and may go with it tomrrow if i can't
resolve this.
the current oscar 4.2.1b5 fails on my SL 3.05 with missing pvm rpms.
i'll be running both the b6 with SL4.2 if i upgrade

again
thanks for your help
