As long as they are the same architecture (i686 vs x86_64 etc) then dual vs
quad core shouldn't make much difference.  If the new cores are radically
different in speed, they will not run with their full capacity since the
cluster tends to be limited to its slowest parts.  This depends a bit on
what you are doing with it.

You can run mixed architecture clusters, you just have to remember that they
can't run the same binaries.  So you end up needing a much more complicated
setup than you might think.  In this case the head node must be x86_64.
