You don't actually need 64-bit Linux on a 64-bit arch. My work machine is 64-bit but I installed SUSE Linux Ent Desktop 11 32-bit on it. The only issue as far as desktop annoyances are concerned for 64-bit machines is the lack of native Adobe Flash plugin for your browser i.e. no Youtube == bummer!
You gotta use nspluginwarapper to get the 32-bit Adobe Flash plugin running on your 64-bit system. As far as phones are concerned I have tested E71, and most SE K series work with SUSE/Fedora/Ubuntu outta the box.
