Spam Catchers Block Latest Crypto-Gram
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/16/0218230

An anonymous reader writes "Bruce Schneier sent out a note about
SpamAssassin and possibly other spam filters blocking his excellent
Crypto-Gram newsletter. Fortunately you can get [0]it here (early no
less!)." Schneier's email reads, in part "Tomorrow I will be sending
out the February CRYPTO-GRAM, as I do on the 15th of every month. In
the process of creating this month's Crypto-Gram, I discovered that
SpamAssassin thinks that this issue is spam, probably because of
certain links and descriptions of scams in the text. I have anecdotal
evidence that other spam filters block Crypto-Gram as well. ... I'd
apologize for the inconvenience, but I'm not sure what I could do to
make it less so -- I don't intend to alter my content to accommodate
    spam filters."

An Extensive History of Anime
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/15/1547222

[0]Ninja Master Gara writes "While it is a bit dated, [1]Right Stuf has
a [2]fascinating set of in depth history of anime in Japan and the west
and follows the development of both cultures, including landmark series
    from [3]the 60s, [4]the 70s, [5]the 80s and [6]beyond, the origins of
today's major anime release companies, and commentary on various
aspects of the industry and culture. While it is labelled an

for long time anime fans. Right Stuf also has a great [7]timeline of

Keyboard Layouts for the 21st Century?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/15/2218258

[0]jules asks: "Trying to do some programming on an iBook the other day
brought to my attention the fact that despite the constant improvements
to the design of computer hardware and software, the keyboards we use
are still a throwback to the early 1980s. I mean - my Mac doesn't have
room for page up/down or home/end keys, but it devotes a whole key to a
sort of double-S shape that I will never press. And my PC keyboards all
    waste plastic on a backwards-apostrophe key and a scroll-lock (+ LED!),
while functions that you use all the time, such as switching between
windows, cut/copy/paste, back/forwards, undo/redo etc, all have to
double-up with other keys.. Have any organizations actually tried to
re-invent the keyboard recently? (..not counting the manufacturers who
stick a few 'multimedia' keys along the top for consumer PCs). Would
this be doomed to failure because of the tens of thousands of legacy
apps that expect things to be the way they are? What sort of keys would
you include in your fantasy keyboard layout?" It's not just the keys on
your keyboard that are important, it's also how you arrange them. What
kind of keyboard arrangements might we see in the future?

Speak Up On FCC VoIP Regulation
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/15/212259

[0]jeffpulver writes "Speak now or forever hold your peace. The FCC
will decide whether or not to regulate Internet Telephony in the U.S.
over the next several months. On February 5th I filed a petition with
the FCC on behalf of [1]Free World Dialup, asking for a Declaratory
Ruling that states that Broadband Internet Telephony which doesn't
touch the public switched telephone network (PSTN) should not be ruled
as either "Telecommunications" or as a "Telecommunications Service" as
defined by the Telecom Act of 1996. On February 14th the FCC put the
pulver.com petition out for public comment. The public has until March
14th to respond." This is an important issue -- read on below for some

Crack Windows XP With... Windows 2000
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/15/2048222

An anonymous reader writes "According to [0]this story seen on
[1]Brian's Buzz on Windows, access to a Windows 2000 CD is all that is
needed to bypass all (well, most) Windows XP security features. An
attacker can boot up XP and start the Windows 2000 Recovery Console
which allows them to operate as any user, even Administrator, without
requiring them to enter a password. This method even allows someone to
copy files to removable media, something which normally the
Administrator can't even do in the Recovery Console."

War Hero Thwarted Nazi Heavy Water Production
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/15/1910240

[0]Freshly Exhumed writes "Its doubtful you know the name of Einar
Skinnarland, but his sabotage over several years repeatedly thwarted
Nazi plans to exploit Norway's heavy water production capabilities for
their atomic bomb research plans. Skinnerland recently passed away in
Canada and his daring exploits are [1]recounted here. Details of some
of the raids on the production facilities can be found [2]on pafko and
[3]Stephen's Study Room. So many 'what if?'s and [4]suspicions have

70-Year-Old Prank Revealed
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/15/1913250

Saturday in the [0]San Francisco Chronicle a [1]story about a prank
that the [2]Clampers (E Clampus Vitus, man!) pulled on UC Berkeley was
featured. In short the Clampers faked a [3]brass plaque that intimated
that Sir Francis Drake landed in [4]Marin 462 years ago. The Clampers
are an organization known for, well, drinking and horsing around, but
this kind of prank, one that spans 70 years (or more than 400,
depending on your point of view) is epic and inspiring.

Freshmeat
GCC Myths and Facts
http://freshmeat.net/articles/view/730

Since my good old Pentium 166 days, I've liked to search for the best
optimizations possible so programs can take the maximum advantage of
hardware/CPU cycles. If I have a nice piece of hardware, why not run it
at its full power, using every little feature? Shouldn't we all try to
get the best results from the money invested in our machines?

kind of device. If you have such kind of home-made device (or even if
you don't, it's easy to build), you may use Parctrl to remotely access
your parport through a CGI script and browser. You may use it to turn
remote machines on or off in your local network, turn lights on or off,
security systems, alarms or any kind of electrical device. If you are
connected to the Internet, you may access it from anywhere in the
world. It has two parts: a driver, that does the low level access, and
the CGI script, which acts as a interface for the driver. Parctrl uses
secure SHA password authentication, and also allows you to restrict
users access to some parport outputs.

http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/15/1342225

    - By Patrick 'LinuxAddict' Pauwels - The largest flaw with Linux is not

software. The hardware support is solid. Actually, I feel Linux is very
much ready for the masses. The greatest flaw with Linux is that nobody
    knows what it is.

Open Source in Mexico - Part Two
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/02/12/0146222

    - By Robin 'Roblimo' Miller - While attending CONSOL 2003, I quickly
realized that the Open Source movement in Mexico is just barely
starting to discover business -- or perhaps it's the other way around.
In many ways, the idea of Open Source is much more political in Mexico
than in the U.S., and there is a uniquely Mexican holdback to Open
Source adoption that is, sadly, a reflection of some of the worst
aspects of Mexican corporate and ...

infrastructure/plumbing. DVArchive V2.0 is now available You can read
more about DVArchive at it's home page http://dvarchive.sourceforge.net
DVArchive V2.0 makes some serious changes in your DVArchive.xml and
Local.guide files. Please read the CHANGELOG.txt before running it and
if you are upgrading, be sure to backup your Local.guide and
DVArchive.xml files first. If this will be your first use of DVArchive,
please review the README.txt before running it. -- Gerrys Plea :-) ***
PLEASE READ THE CHANGELOG.txt and README.txt *** Most questions folks
have asked are answered in the CHANGELOG.txt or the README.txt or
TROUBLESHOOTING.txt. Please check them over before you report a problem
    - it's good for you (quick resolution) and the community in general
(saves resources for the new issues). Thanks in advance! -- A brief
summary of new features: * Support for Replay 4xxx and 5xxx units *
New, efficiant/clean/single window interface - Combined single window
DVR Explorer - Context sensitive menus (regular and popup) - Full Drag
and Drop support * Ability to store show files using the shows title

ReplayTV off (to free up time and speed up downloads) * Ability to edit
ALL information about a show (including date/time, ratings, etc) *
Periodic renegotiation of time offset (so that DVA keeps working even
if your computers clock drifts over time - useful when DVA is left
running all the time) There is really a lot more - the item about a new
User interface is deceptive as this has literally dozens of
    changes/enhancements contained in it.

SCons 0.11 is now available
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=251609

SCons alpha release 0.11 is now available for download. SCons is a
software construction tool (build tool, or substitute for Make)
implemented in Python, based on the winning design in the Software
Carpentry build tool competition (in turn based on the Cons build
tool). IMPORTANT: Release 0.11 contains the following interface
changes: - The default suffix for static object files when using gcc
has been changed to ".os" to allow shared and static object files to
exist side-by-side in the same directory. - When no command-line
targets are specified, the default behavior is now to build all derived
files in or below the current directory (like Make). This can be
disabled by explicitly specifying "Default(None)" in an SConscript
file. - Setting the BUILDERS construction variable now clears previous
Builder attributes from the construction Environment. - An "env"
argument has been added to the strfunction() method of Python function
Actions. See the release notes for more information about these
changes. This release adds the following features: - A new CacheDir()
function and related command-line options --cache-disable,
--cache-force and --cache-show support the ability to share derived
files between builds. - Support for the IRIX platform and SGI MIPSPro
tool chain. - Support for the PharLap ETS tool chain. - Support for
compiling with Microsoft VC++ when running Cygwin Python. - New
AddPreAction() and AddPostAction() functions. - Python function Actions
can now include the contents of construction variables in their
signatures. - A new strfunction() method has been added for external
command Actions. - The SConscript() function now takes optional
"build_dir" and "duplicate" keyword arguments that make it easier to
set up a build directory. - The same Win32 object files can now be
linked into either shared or static libraries. The following fixes have
been added: - Fixed many (not all) situations when interrupts (CTRL-C)
wouldn't actually stop a build. - Libraries in the LIBS construction
variable can now explicitly include a library prefix and suffix. - The
    Win32 scons.bat script now has DOS-standard CR-LF line endings. - Fixed
how the Environment.Append() method works BUILDERS (and other
dictionaries). - Fixed how a file prefix is added when the target isn't
    specified. - Better error messages whene a BuildDir is read-only. - A
platform or tool module can now be directly imported even after it's
been included in a construction Environment. - The output of -c -n is
now correct when a target is a directory. Performance has been improved
as follows: - Added support for caching values when use
--implicit-cache. The following changes have been made to the SCons
    packaging: - Added new --standard-lib, --standalone-lib and
--version-lib options to the "setup.py install" command to make it
easier to install the SCons build engine (library) into different
locations. If no explicit library installation location is specified,
the SCons "setup.py" script now looks for an existing SCons build
engine in these three locations and prefers where the build engine was
installed previously. The documentation has been improved: - Eliminated
description of some deprecated keywords. - Updated description of
BuildDir() to try to explain more clearly how to set up a build
    directory.
