Linux event in Europe. It will be held in Karlsruhe, Germany. Four days
will be packed with up to 20,000 visitors, over 120 [1]exhibitors

The Real Reason for Sending Astronauts into Space

Puneet writes "An article on [0]New York Times discussing the [1]need
for astronauts for carrying out experiments in space. Too many of the
planned experiments depend on crew operations when they could more
effectively be done without them. In many cases, the crew is needed

[0]gessel writes "Have you ever used the word "[1]ironic?" Do you know

EMI and Sony Lose Lawsuit Over Crippled Music Disks
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/28/2014236

[0]neves writes "A brazilian consumer has sued EMI and Sony, and won!
The reason was a copy protection technology in the best seller album
"Tribalistas" that didn't play in his car. You can read about it in
[1]Folha de São Paulo (babelfish [2] translation here), brazilian
biggest newspaper. They must be very afraid, since EMI vice-president
defended the company himself in a lawsuit involving less than US$
350,00. A more detailed report is in my music site [3]Agenda do Samba &
Choro (babelfish [4]here), where we release some of the lawsuit files
to make it easier for others to sue them. Since last year, we are
calling for a [5]boycott ([6]babelfish) of copy protected albums. The
companies appealed, and said that they will take the case to the
Supreme Court, because it is a 'question of principles'. The consumer
is sueing them again, because all new EMI albums in Brazil are being
released with copy protection and won't work in his car."

Linux Usage in the UK
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/28/1956206

[0]pdajames writes "Techies don't seem to understand that businesses
want to have a support contract with their usual supplier before they
will buy Linux, even though the likelihood is that they may never need
support. A survey in the UK showed that [1]support concerns were the
No. 1 factor keeping companies from investing in open source software."

$180 Million for Piracy Conspiracy
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/28/181227

theCoder writes "According to an AP [0]story printed in the [1]Orlando
Sentinel, Steven R. Frazier has been ordered to pay $180 million
restitution for attempting to sell a device that would decrypt the
satellite signals sent into everyone's homes. In addition to spending
the next 5 years in Federal prison, Frazier will have to pay $500 a
month for the next 30,000 years, though no one really expects him to
live long enough to make all the payments. That value is based on
estimated loses DirectTV and Echostar may have incurred had Frazier
been able to sell his devices. Being ordered to pay restitution for
actual damages is one thing, but paying for some made up number of
future damages? Maybe if I catch someone trying to break into my car, I
can sue him for the damage he would have caused if he succeeded..."

Two Views On a China-US Space Race
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/06/28/1759245

An anonmous submitter writes "While there has been [0]recent discussion

focused on a potential race between China and the US in near future.
[1]The Space Review recently published a pair of essays on this topic:
[2]the first argues that China-US space race is both unlikely and
undesirable, given the aftermath of the US-USSR space race thirty years

Analysis of SuSE Linux Desktop

[0]pdajames writes "[1]ZDNet UK has a [2]look at the new SuSE Linux

about there when it comes to desktop users, although their words about

spew their venom? Whatever answer you have to these questions, you had
better be very polite if you post those answers in a public forum like
    NewsForge, because if you ...
