Slashdot
More on SCO Code Snippets
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/14/0149238

[0]anoopsinha writes "A story in [1]linuxworld reports that SCO itself
has [2] no idea what the history of a particular snippet of code might
be - even a high profile snippet like the one SCO highlighted at SCO
Forum. Having no idea if its claims have merit has not stopped SCO so
far, so we can expect more from SCO along the lines of big claims with
    no merit."

Half-Life 2, ATI, NVIDIA, and a Sack of Cash
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/13/1923213

Latent IT writes "If you're into games, and unless you've been living
under a rock for the past few days, you've heard a bit of a rumble from
[0]Valve on the relative quality of [1]ATI vs. [2]NVIDIA cards.
Starting with articles like [3]this one (previously reported), Valve
told the world that the ATI 9800 Pro was nearly three times faster in
some cases than the formerly competitive NVIDIA offering, the 5900
Ultra. Curiously, this happened at an ATI sponsored event, "Shader
Day". But the story hasn't stopped there. NVidia released [4]this
response, essentially claiming that their new drivers, that were
available to Valve at the time of their press conference, would make
for vast, legitimate performance improvements. An [5]interview with
Massive, the creators of the Aquamark 3d benchmark, seems to confirm
this opinion - that the NV3x chipset wasn't designed around any certain
API very well, and the drivers are critical in achieving good
performance. Anandtech writes [6]here about the restrictions Valve
placed on what benchmarks could be run. However, the key to this whole
story may be this: [7]an article, which I haven't seen get much
coverage in all this, seems to make everything a little clearer - Valve
stated that their OEM bundling deal with ATI came from the fact that
ATI's cards were so superior, and that they were "performance
enthusiasts". However, if the Inquirer is to be believed, the bundling
deal was a result of an outright auction, on what will probably be the
most popular game of the year. [8]Which year that might be, is another
issue altogether. Whatever happened to just making hardware, and making
    games?"

Can Lotus Notes R3 Prior Art Save The Browser?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/13/1747219

[0]theodp writes "Apparently stunned by the [1]implications of [2]Eolas
vs Microsoft, Ray Ozzie of Lotus Notes and Groove fame [3]offers up
Notes R3 as prior art for the notorious Eolas patent. To bolster his
argument, Ozzie used the Notes R3 feature set to recreate a scenario
close to what was described in the patent. After the hard part of
putting together a Notes R3 computing environment that included MS-DOS
    6.22, Windows for Workgroups 3.11, and a circa-1993 copy of Excel 5.0
obtained from eBay, it only took Ozzie about 15 minutes to knock out a

Pilot a Plane with a PDA?
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/09/13/0211243

An anonymous reader writes "[0]This whitepaper describes how engineers
at IBM's Pervasive Computing Advanced Technology Laboratory created a
Linux-based, intelligent, remote control system for a model airplane as
a way to showcase gateway server technology. The onboard computer
controls various navigational equipment and interfaces to a wireless
access point and PDA. The user can control the plane through handheld
wireless technology. A 3-dimensional virtual flight environment tracks
the plane's flight and provides a gps-based autopilot function. The
environment is based on LandSAT maps and gives the user a virtual view
of the flight from the cockpit of the plane, which can be augmented by
real-time updates from an onboard camera. The article briefly
introduces "gateway server" concepts, describes the embedded hardware
and software architecture, explains how the IBM developers implemented
the control systems, and includes lots of cool photos."

ULN - User Level Networking 20030913
http://freshmeat.net/releases/135795/

User Level Networking is software designed to allow the dynamic
allocation of IP addresses. The basic idea is to give different IP
addresses to different users, thus identifying the UID-HOST pair with
an IP address. It includes a patch to the kernel which must be applied
to every client in the LAN, a suid executable which will be used by the
users to get their IP address from the server and activate it on a
virtual interface (like eth0:*) on the local computer, and an
executable which will be launched by sshd on the server host.

VIrus 0.0.6 (Development)
http://freshmeat.net/releases/135830/

VIrus (VI resembling utility skeleton) was originally taken from
busybox and stripped of most unrelated stuff. The intention is to
provide a pure, minimalist VI implementation that allows you to switch
off shell-escaping and other security risks by default, and allow the
admin to offer an interim user to just have a vi as login-shell on a
certain host, while allowing others to work with a resource-sensitive
and small vi implementation for your OS bootdisks.

GNU/Linux saves the day
http://newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/12/1733209

     - by Jason Yost - Microsoft, in its neverending quest to convince the
world that Windows is better and more cost-effective than GNU/Linux,
recently funded a research group to run some tests. The results of
course came out in favor of Microsoft and .NET being more
    cost-effective to develop applications than J2EE and GNU/Linux. I
chuckled to myself, wondering who could be so gullible, as I glanced
over at the new Linux server my IT department had ...

An Open Source Letter to Whom, SCO?
http://newsvac.newsforge.com/article.pl?sid=03/09/14/0132224

When Darl McBride sent his open letter to the open source community, I
was especially struck by the offer to work with the community to work
out various IP issues and perhaps a new "design a new business model
that enhances the stability and trustworthiness of the Open Source

Who is responsible for security: Can we move past the finger-pointing?

Gallery v1.4-pl1 released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=309878

Gallery v.1.4-pl1 has been released. Gallery is a slick, intuitive web
based photo gallery with authenticated users and privileged albums.
Easy to install, configure and use. Photo management includes automatic
thumbnails, resizing, rotation, etc. User privileges make this great
for communities. Version 1.4 premieres some major new features: Gallery
is now internationalized, and can be displayed in more than 20
languages, with more on the way! In addition, we've completely
overhauled the documentation and made it more accessible and more
informative. Other changes include ownership of individual album items,
not just of albums, and a slew of minor improvements and bugfixes.
Additional features new to Gallery 1.4 include: * Support for lossless
JPEG rotation, and new "flip photo" options * Image size and JPEG EXIF
data can be displayed below photos * Data loss prevented if disk space
is exceeded * Image dimensions and file size can be restricted *
Support for "*" wildcards in search field * Add items to front or back

NASM 0.98.38 is released
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=310061

The most important change to 0.98.38 is that the broken ELF backend in
0.98.37 has (hopefully) been fixed. The Netwide Assembler, NASM, is an
80x86 assembler designed for portability and modularity. It supports a
range of object file formats, including Linux and NetBSD/FreeBSD a.out,
ELF, COFF, Microsoft 16-bit OBJ and Win32. It will also output plain
binary files. Its syntax is designed to be simple and easy to
understand, similar to Intel's but less complex. It supports Pentium,
P6, MMX, 3DNow!, SSE and SSE2 opcodes, and has macro capability. * Add
Makefile for 16-bit DOS binaries under OpenWatcom, and modify mkdep.pl
to be able to generate completely pathless dependencies, as required by
OpenWatcom wmake (it supports path searches, but not explicit paths.) *
Fix the STR instruction. * Fix the ELF output format, which was broken
under certain circumstances due to the addition of stabs support. *
Quick-fix Borland format debug-info for -f obj * Fix for %rep with no
arguments (#560568) * Fix concatenation of preprocessor function call
(#794686) * Fix long label causes coredump (#677841) * Use autoheader
as well as autoconf to keep configure from generating ridiculously long
command lines. * Make sure that all of the formats which support
debugging output actually will suppress debugging output when -g not
    specified.

Updates to mp4live - testing help wanted
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=310093

We're finished with the main updates to mp4live. Our in-house test has
been running for 10 days still maintaining audio/video sync. These
changes were accomplished by updating to the V4L2 driver, and updating
faac. These changes have been submitted to CVS on sourceforge. To use
them you must install v4L2 (server/mp4live has a new html file telling
you how we accomplished that). The MPEG4IP project provides an MPEG and
IETF standards-based system for encoding, streaming, and playing MPEG-4
encoded audio and video. We also require a seperate installation of the
faac package, like we did with lame. You must go to www.audiocoding.com
and download the latest faac. Then, before configuring or compiling,
un-tar the faac_mpeg4ip_add.tar in the faac directory. Then configure,
build and install faac. faac_mpeg4ip_add.tar is used to install the
faac.h file. We will be working with the faac guys to have that as part
of their package. Then configure and install mpeg4ip. Bill

KDE 3.1.3(a) RPMs moved to stable
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?forum_id=310176

The kde 3.1.3(a) packages have been moved to the stable repository. Get
'em while they're hot. The KDE for RedHat project intends to promote
the use of KDE and KDE-based applications on RedHat Linux. (3.1.4 is in
the works, and maybe, just maybe, we may see a preview of 3.2 showing
up in unstable in the not-too-distant future.).
