Well, they are similar -- CVS is like SVN with your hands and feet shackled :) Seriously, though, a lot of projects still use CVS (for legacy reasons, etc.) and the two do share much in common (SVN was a rewrite of CVS to remove some of the shackles.) I remember that the O'Reilly book on CVS is really good.
