Just thought I'd pipe in. The company I work for has developed some fairly large Java client applications (GlobeInvestorGOLD to name one, http://gold.globeinvestor.com) and the developers who work on them don't have very nice things to say about inconsistencies between VMs and VM versions. I know they are regularly being called back to fix some bug that affects just a single version of some VM.
I know this isn't everyone's experience with Java, and that more recent versions have been great. >From my perspective, I'm pretty happy that I don't have to deal with these issues while developing applications for Flash.
