A little late now for this, but I'd like to make a suggestion. In our environment at work it would be nearly impossible to get a corporate donation to open source projects even if the developers got management on board (they most likely would be).
However it's relatively easy for us to get them to purchase developer tools. If anyone running projects like this were to make a "commercial download" version using some simple cart package (google checkout? paypal? whatever). A donation could be a simple purchase-req away.
