A word of caution:

((vps == real_server) === false ) === true

in particular when trying to scale large amounts of ram or processing
power, the overhead of being within a vps system tends to take a toll,
in particular with memory and virtual memory usage. SO

if you have a memory-intensive server-side application (e.g.
php5,serializing strings, etc.) be careful about choosing vps versus
dedicated servers.

Dedicated servers can be had for reasonable amounts of money from

iWeb.ca
rackspace.com

and while a dedicate server is almost always going to be much more
expensive (99 versus 30/month) than the virtual private server, if
scaleability is an issue, dedicated remains the best option - in my
experience...

--- also there are certain levels of flexibility still not achieved by
private servers in terms of customizing software (for instance, if you
want to run FUSE on a private server, it's almost always impossible),
or if you run software that binds to a mac address on your ethernet
card, ...

So - buyer beware. In this world you still get what you pay for.
