As others have said hold back source and anything else you can (e.g.
optimized/release version of an executable) until final payment. Of
course repeat orders from customers is the most efficient way to find
work so don't get so anal about payment that you spoil the goodwill.

Be more careful if the client is not local, and you've never met them.
Nothing gets a bad debt paid quicker than a face-to-face meeting, which
is tricky when they are on a different continent.

As another tip, when negotiating price in the early stages I often offer
a discount (e.g. 10%) for advance payment. If the client does not go for
this, they are either dishonest or have cash flow issues. Either way it
raises a red flag and you should proceed with more caution.

Also, for longer projects, break payments up by the month; if a payment
does not arrive on time then stop work immediately (and of course
email/call the client that day to explain why work is frozen).
