That would be quite a hackery, IMO. Are you going to handle all the issues with path, detection whether certain binaries are available or not and potentially which versions they are in the application code? That is far easier and safer to do at the operating system level and it also leaves the door open for the potential packager to adapt the script to the conventions used by the particular distro. If it is part of the binary, one cannot do this unless the application is shipped with source. That could be an issue for commercial software vendors using OSG.
