Thanks for the response, things are a lot clearer now, I think I've just been 
working myself into a hole.

In regards to your questions, the osgShadow example does work for us, in our 
environment (it's a custom Linux based OS), after some playing around with 
drivers and such. 

We're using osgShadow::ShadowMap right now, we're still in a kind of Proof of 
concept stage with implementing OSG, so after looking around it seemed like 
this would be the easiest to implement. 

Thanks for all the info, these are the kinds of answers I was looking for.
