What are we going to do? Change to stupid DirectX API? I hate they putted version number in Direc3D date type such as D3DMATERIAL9 or D3DLIGHT9.

I think that the issue is the same as with Linux drivers - OpenGL users
are an insignificant minority in their customer base. ATI makes most of
their income on selling retail and OEM to gamers and laptop
manufacturers. Linux and pro users are the proverbial drop in the bucket
- - you or me buy an expensive card, but perhaps once in two years and
there are perhaps 2000 such customers total. ATI gains more in sales
from a single Walmart in a week, I think.

Nvidia's situation is a bit different - there was a lot of pressure from
the pro animation scene on them to fix their drivers when these studios
were moving away from the expensive Unix boxes in late 90-ties. ATI
doesn't have those 800lb gorillas breathing up their back now.
