I personally do not really care about C#, however a wrapper of a wrapper is certainly a rather bad idea and not only for performance reasons (e.g. loss of type information, loss of some functionality, etc.). It could work for a hackish and limited prototype, but not really for a real application which needs a lot of functionality from the underlying lib and has to be maintainable.
