by using gpadmanipulator->setNode(cameraNode), where gpadmanipulator is a class derived from MatrixManipulator, setNode() method is copied from DriveManipulator source, and cameraNode is a CameraNode that is used to render the scene into the FBO. The gamepad manipulator works fine when attached to the Viewer with addCameraManipulator().
