This code should work with osg 1.2, not sure if the api changed post 1.2.  
Concept should be the same.
http://www.nps.navy.mil/cs/sullivan/osgtutorials/osgNodeMask.htm also has an 
example of why int vice bool.

you could use

sceneView->setCullMask( 0x01 )

to restrict the culling on those nodes with the node mask 0x01. This
prevents the nodes with a different mask from culling and thus from drawing.
