Yes, the usage you see of it in the OpenFlight load is what I'd
classify as general use.

If you don't want to overwrite existing UserData simply check for it
and then emit a warning that you are overriding it.  One thing you can
also do is create your own ComposuteUserData container that can hold
multiple UserData entires and then pop the existing ones in this and
carry on.   I have considered adding such a help class to the OSG, but
since I have plenty of work on my plate I have delayed it until it was
really really needed.

The OSG just carries UserData around it does little with it, the
purpose is for applications to use it.
