The will probably be the easist solution. You can actually run X11 without any window manager if you wish.
2) When I edit nvidia-settings, how can I get those settings to stick the next time I boot? Also, is there a way to make the settings user specific.
Not sure about nvidia-settings, have only dabbled with it a little. Most of the time I've just edited the /etc/X11/xorg.conf by hand.
