Thanks Ede for the feedback.

Indeed including docker images in the VM will increase the size significantly. Unfortunately I do not see a viable solution to maintain the VM script-based installers at this point. Almost all OSGeo projects are currently offering/maintaining docker images, so my proposal is to include this effort in the VM, without the extra burden to maintain shell scripts.

The goal would be:
1. Keep the iso distribution with core debian packages.
2. Distribute a VM version including docker images. We would need to determine if we want to download all docker images (for offline usage) or if we prefer to point to online docker images at runtime. 3. Adapt the documentation to use docker / docker compose style of running the VM applications.

Best,
Angelos

hey Angelos,

you propose docker-only only for the apps in the VM right? using images will lead to a much bigger VM image because of the duplicated dependencies in each docker-image.

are you planning to retire the disc setup in the future?

sunny regards.. ede

Hi all,

Since there has been no feedback or fixes for the VM, I propose we stop here and re-think the VM version in 18.0.
Proposal for next version:
1. We remove unresponsive projects
2. We ask active project to provide docker-only setups for the VM version from now on.

Thoughts?

Best,
Angelos

Happy New Year!

The first build for the VM is now available.
Please download [1] test and report any issues found [2]

Known issues:
There are a few projects that are not ready or failing in the VM build:
* GeoNode (pending change to docker setup)
* EOxServer (needs a maintainer to update the installer)
* T-Rex (needs a maintainer, no debian installer for noble or docker image available. 2 years inactivity on GitHub.) * Rasdaman (download server is down http://kahlua.eecs.jacobs-university.de/~earthlook/osgeo/ )
* pgAdmin (freezes after installation)

Angelos
