Australia puts hostage negotiators on stand-by Australia's Federal Police Commissioner, Mick Keelty, says hostage negotiators are on stand-by to fly to the Middle East if they are needed. A group called the Horror Brigades of the Islamic Secret Army claims it has kidnapped four people, including two Australian security guards. The group has threatend to kill the Australians unless Australia announces an end to its involvement in Iraq within 24 hours. But our reporter, Stephanie Kennedy, says Prime Minister John Howard says there won't be any concessions. Prime Minister, John Howard, says the government can't verify the claim but the 88 Australians listed with the embassy have all been accounted for. There are other Australians working in Iraq who haven't registered but Mr Howard thinks it is encouraging that there hasn't been any video footage or photographic evidence of the alleged hostages. However, he says if Australians have been kidnapped, the government won't cave in to the terrorists' demands and the leader of the opposition Labor Party, Mark Latham, agrees. The Australian Federal Police (AFP) commissioner, Mick Keelty, says when foreigners started being kidnapped in Iraq, the AFP trained officers to deal with a crisis involving Australian nationals. "We've got hostage negotiaters, experts in hostage negotiation and counter terrorism ready to deploy should the government require it," he said. Department officials and officers from the federal police have been meeting in Canberra to discuss the situation. 14/09/2004 20:00:35 | ABC Radio Australia News ------------------------ Yahoo!
