Bhutto's husband given bail

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (CNN) -- One day after authorities arrested Asif Ali
Zardari, the husband of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto,
a high court in Sindh province ruled he could be freed on $5,000 bail,
officials have said.

Zardari is expected to make bail and be released before the end of
Wednesday.

The opposition leader, head of the Pakistan People's Party, was arrested
as he arrived at Islamabad airport Tuesday.

Zardari's lawyer told CNN police presented the opposition leader with
arrest warrants and took him into custody, but didn't say why he was
being arrested.

He was released last month on bail by the Supreme Court. Zardari had
been imprisoned on corruption and abuse of power charges since November
1996, when then-President Farooq Leghari dissolved Bhutto's government.

Iraq's Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said Zardari was
re-arrested because the court canceled his bail. He called it a routine
matter.

The arrest came as police tried to crack down on violent clashes by
using tear gas on Pakistan People's Party members outside the Islamabad
airport as Zardari arrived.

More than 500 People's Party members have been arrested since Monday
night, including at least a dozen members of parliament -- some
sustaining injuries.

A party spokesman said the arrests are more widespread, with more than
2,000 party members taken into custody.
