Kharrazi discusses gas pipeline with Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: Iranâs Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi held talks on Monday with
President Pervez Musharraf that included a proposed gas pipeline project, the
Foreign Ministry said.

"They discussed bilateral relations, including (the) Iran-Pakistan gas
pipeline and developments in the region," a ministry statement said. Kharrazi
arrived on Monday for a two-day visit. He will also meet with Prime Minister
Shaukat Aziz and his counterpart, Khurshid Kasuri, on Tuesday.

In his meeting with Musharraf, Kharrazi "noted Pakistanâs contributions to
the fight against terrorism," the statement said. Iran has proposed to build a
2,600-kilometre pipeline to export its gas to Pakistan, and possibly India.

But the project has faltered since 1996 as India has been reluctant to join
because of concerns for the safety of the pipeline through Pakistani
territory.

The visit will provide an opportunity to review Pakistan-Iran bilateral
relations and exchange of views on regional and global developments, ministry
spokesman Masood Khan said. Kharraziâs visit to Pakistan is part of
high-level
consultations between Pakistan and Iran.
