Blasts in Riyadh rattle Ministry of Interior

At least two explosions, attributed to car bombs, rocked central Riyadh
today in the vicinity of the Ministry of Interior Headquarters. The attack
comes ten days after an audiotaped message from Osama Bin Laden called for
the people of Saudi Arabia to rise up against the government, which Bin
Laden accused of violating the tenets of Islam. (Another Bin Laden message
2 days ago was addressed to the people of Iraq.)

In his message, Bin Laden singled out the Interior Ministry as carrying a
large degree of responsibility for enforcing the policies of the House of
Saud. Bin Laden in essence called for a coup against the government.

<>Readers of the Northeast Intelligence Network should not be surprised at
this attack. In fact, almost exactly one year ago, on December 24, Al Qaeda
of the Arabian Peninsula signaled their intents against the Ministry of
Interior on the cover of issue 7 of Voice of Jihad. That issue featured an
image of a building in flames. </>

Northeast Intelligence Network Analyst Sean Osborne correctly identified the
building as the headquarters of the Ministry of Interior.

Not much information is available at this time regarding the attack.
However, a source with the Ministry of Interior described the car bombing as
“professionally done”.

The cause of the explosions was not immediately known and there were no
immediate reports of deaths.

Officially, the ministry has confirmed that an explosion did occur in the
area, said Essam Al-Ghalib, a journalist for Arab News in Jeddah.

<>"There are injuries," Al-Ghalib said, citing an employee of the Ministry
of Information, which is adjacent to the Ministry of Interior.</> <>Omar
Al-Zebaidy, correspondent for the Arabic-language television news network
Al-Arabiya, said there were two explosions.</><>Other reports from Saudi
Arabia indicate the following:</>

* Confrontations in Al-Maseef district and ongoing gunfights

* Gunfire in Al-Suwaidi district; apparently a clash between militants
and security forces

* A third explosion in the Al Jazeera district near an American
Institute.

<>Analysts at the Northeast Intelligence Network believe that this attack is
the work of Al Qaeda of the Arabian Peninsula, and expects a statement of
responsibility to be issued within the next few hours.</> <>
