Hu shuffles military leaders

Chinese President Hu Jintao has carried out a major reshuffling of
military leaders, according to the PRC-owned newspaper Wen Wei Po.

The newspaper reported Dec. 21 that the shift was the largest
readjustment of senior generals since Hu took over as chairman of the
Central Military Commission earlier this year.

The appointments include naming Lanzhou Military Region Political
Commissar Liu Yongzhi as deputy director of the General Political
Department (GPD), and the promotion of Beijing Military Region Chief
of Staff Chang Wanquan to be commander of Shenyang Military Region.

The report said "many generals" will reach the mandatory retirement
age this year. As a result, more changes are likely.

"This year-end round of military personnel transfers can be seen as
the first round of senior military leader transfers since Hu Jintao
took over the leadership of the armed forces, hence it merits
attention," the newspaper reported.
